Most of us start the year with various resolutions related to self improvement, but being more productive or organised is difficult when your home environment is chaotic. We’ve put together some tips to help you put your best foot forward this New Year.
Get rid of things you don’t need!
It seems obvious, but few people actually follow this advice. Most of us have been guilty at some point of filling a cupboard or a drawer full of things that we know deep down we’ll never use. If you have a drawer full of the old spice shower gel your nan keeps buying you for Christmas every year or an exercise bike from the 80s that has been utilised for the past several decades as a bizarre clothes horse, you’re only wasting space that could be used more efficiently for something else. Have that difficult conversation with your nan and start paying for a gym membership (that you will also never use).
Organise your storage space
Once you’ve recycled or given everything you don’t need to someone who does need it like the responsible citizen you are, you can start to properly rationalise your storage space. This doesn’t mean you have to put all your household appliances in alphabetical order, but wouldn’t it be great to know where your tennis racket is when you want to play tennis? You’re in luck- it’s in the sports drawer.
Be consistent
If you identify as being a messy person, there’s no reason why you can’t change your behaviour, but this will require some willpower when you first start being more organised. As with anything else though, if you put the work in at the beginning even something like cleaning can become automatic. Write down when you’re going to clean what in your house and stick to it- you’ll soon find that the benefits of an ordered home environment far outweigh the effort you have to put in to maintain it.
Call a pro
We might be biased, but having your carpets and upholstery professionally cleaned is a big part of maintaining a healthy home. It will save you money in the long run in terms of shelling out for expensive replacements and our powerful cleaning equipment removes allergens and bacteria that can’t be removed with normal household cleaning products and appliances. If your home is squeaky clean you’re more likely to want to keep it that way, so make a fresh start this New Year!
